The objective of this study was to determine the LC50 (96h) of two pesticides: Sirius® 250 SC herbicide of the pyrazosulfuron-ethyl group, and Talcord® insecticide of the permethrin group, on juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimp total hemocyte count (THC) was also determined as an indication of physiological alterations caused by the pesticides. Juvenile shrimp (5.0 ± 0.5 g) were exposed to the following concentrations: 0, 0.1, 1.0, 10, 100 and 1000 µg L-1 Sirius® 250 SC; and 0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 and 10 µg L-1 Talcord®. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability of corn snacks containing different concentrations of powdered shrimp. Five snack formulations were prepared: the control (with no powdered shrimp), F1, F2, F3 and F4, with the addition of 2%, 4%, 8% and 16% powdered shrimp respectively. The raw materials were subjected to a process of thermoplastic extrusion in a single-screw extruder with 3 mm radial die. This study was elaborated to identify and describe the main links of the sea shrimp productive chain in the municipal district of Laguna, historically known as the main sea shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) production area in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The study, held from April to July 2005, previously identified the local productive process through observation, interviews and bibliographical research. Afterwards, specific questionnaires were elaborated for each of the several segments connected to the local activity. Antibiotic resistance of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from pond-reared Litopenaeus vannamei marketed in Natal, Brazil BJM

Ten out of fifty fresh and refrigerated samples of shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) collected from retailers in Natal (Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil) tested positive for Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The Kanagawa test and multiplex PCR assays were used to detect TDH and TRH hemolysins and the tdh, trh and tlh genes, respectively. All strains were Kanagawa-negative and tlh-positive. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was done for seven antibiotics by the agar diffusion technique. Artificial family selection based on growth rate in cultivated lines of Litopenaeus vannamei (Decapoda, Penaeidae) from Venezuela Genet. Mol. Biol.

We investigated the effects of family selection on the growth rates of four genetic lines of Litopenaeus vannamei, the Pacific white shrimp, from Venezuela. The mean family weight at selection was 16.79 g and the mean growth rate was 0.169 g d-1 at a mean age of 138 days. The mean growth rates per generation were 0.141 g d-1 for the parental generation (P0), 0.173 g d-1 for the F1 and 0.191 g d-1 for the F2. Survival varied from 83.3% to 94.4%. Carbon footprint in commercial cultivation of marine shrimp: a case study in southern Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.

ABSTRACT A life-cycle assessment was conducted during semi-intensive and super-intensive commercial cultivation of marine shrimp from December 2011 to June 2012, considering all phases from the preparation of the nursery to harvesting of the shrimp, to determine the carbon footprints of each process. Inputs and outputs associated to the production of 1 kg of shrimp were evaluated using the CML-1A baseline method, V3.01 EU25, with Software SimaPro® 8.0.2, to identify the factors of impact that are most relevant to the category global warming, measured in kg of CO2 eq. The effects of adding two different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (purified from soybean lecithin, SPC, or marine fish roe, MPC) on growth, survival and osmotic stress resistance as well as lipid and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> was determined. PC was added at a level of 1.5% in a semi-purified diet containing similar levels of essential fatty acids (EFA). A PC-free diet served as the control treatment. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tipo de substrato sobre a preferência, o enterramento e a atividade natatória de camarões (Litopenaeus vannamei). Juvenis (0,93±0,29 g) e adultos machos e fêmeas (10,05±1,18 g) foram observados durante 24 horas, por meio do método animal focal, com registros instantâneos. Composição centesimal e teor de colesterol do camarão branco do Pacífico Ciência Rural

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a composição centesimal e o teor de colesterol da carne do camarão branco do Pacífico (Litopenaeus vannamei), oriundo de uma fazenda localizada no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. As análises na porção muscular do camarão foram realizadas após a retirada do cefalotórax e exoesqueleto. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, os teores de umidade, proteínas, cinzas, lipídios e colesterol apresentaram valores médios de 74,1g 100g-1, 21,9g 100g-1, 1,5g 100g-1, 0,3g 100 g-1 e 26,1mg 100g-1, respectivamente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da densidade de estocagem no cultivo do camarão marinho Litopenaeus vannamei, em água doce. Foram avaliadas as seguintes densidades de estocagem: 5 (D5), 10 (D10), 15 (D15), 20 (D20), 25 (D25) e 30 (D30) camarões por metro quadrado. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com duas repetições. Foram avaliados o desempenho zootécnico dos camarões e os parâmetros físicos e químicos da água. Densidade de estocagem na engorda de camarão-branco cultivado em sistema de biofloco PAB

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a densidade de estocagem ideal para o cultivo de camarão-branco, em sistema de biofloco sem renovação de água. Foram realizados dois experimentos inteiramente casualizados, com três repetições para cada tratamento. No primeiro, juvenis de camarão-branco, com peso médio inicial de 1,23±0,09 g, foram cultivados a densidades de estocagem de 833, 1.250, 1.667, 2.083 e 2.500 camarões por m³. In this study thirty shrimp samples from commercial marine shrimp (L. vannamei) farms of southern region of Brazil were obtained. Hepatopancreas and shell scrapings fragments collected in these animals were processed by transmission electron microscopy using negative staining (rapid preparation), immunoelectron microscopy and immunocytochemistry (immunolabelling with colloidal gold particles) techniques. The present study was aimed at determining the chemical composition and functional properties of shrimp waste protein concentrate and lyophilized flour. We evaluated changes in gene expression of Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp in response to a change in diet by comparing specimens which were fed with an animal protein diet against those which underwent a change from an animal protein diet to a plant protein diet. In addition, we also compared specimens which were fed with a plant protein diet with another group which underwent a change from plant to animal protein diet. Digestive enzyme activity and food ingesta in juvenile shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) as a function of body weight ArchiMer

A study was conducted to evaluate variations of digestive enzyme activities in Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) reared in commercial ponds under semi-intensive conditions. Shrimp were collected at each body weight increase of 2 g. As the shrimp grew (2-12 g), significant increases in the activities of lipase and chymotrypsin were observed. The total protease activity decreased from 6 g onwards. Trypsin activity showed a peak at 6 g and amylase activity increased two-fold after 2 g. Additionally, the stomach contents were analysed microscopically for shrimp between 2 and 10 g. Plant matter contributed above 30% of the total stomach content in 6-, 8- and 10-g shrimp. El empleo de probióticos para el control de enfermedades en la acuicultura intensiva es una alternativa al uso de antibióticos. En este trabajo se aisló la cepa bacteriana IC1 a partir de una fermentación acido láctica de col y se identificó por técnicas moleculares y convencionales como Lactobacillus sp. Se determinó la actividad antagónica in vitro de IC1 contra cepas patrones. Este estudo avaliou o desempenho zootécnico do camarão marinho Litopenaeus vannamei em diferentes tipos de substratos não consolidados. Effect of probiotic supplemented diet on marine shrimp survival after challenge with Vibrio harveyi Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.

The effect of a Lactobacillus plantarum-supplemented diet on shrimp growth, digestive tract bacterial microbiota, survival, and some hemato-immunological parameters after an experimental challenge with Vibrio harveyi was studied. No difference (P&gt;0.05) was observed in shrimp survival (80±6%) and final weight (6.63±0.56g) after 60 days feeding trial. Total bacteria count and Vibrio spp. count in the digestive tract were not diferent (P&gt;0.05) until day 40, but they were lower (P<0.05) in the probiotic-supplemented group on day 60. Effect of salinity on performance and body composition of Pacific white shrimp juveniles reared in a super-intensive system R. Bras. Zootec.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salinity on the culture water quality, performance and body composition of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles (1.16±0.30 g) reared for 36 days in a super-intensive system without water exchange at salinities of 4, 16 and 32‰. Groups of 200 animals (140/m2) were stocked, with three replicates, in nine fiber-cement tanks (1.11 × 1.29 × 0.70 m) with a useful volume of 400 L.
